How did fuel get in my engine oil and how do I fix this?

If your engine has a fuel shut-off valve, ensure that this valve is closed when the engine is not in use. This condition may also be the result of the fuel float in the carburetor being stuck in the open position due to gumming (caused by stale fuel) or debris.

For assistance with your troubleshooting, please download our Carburetion Troubleshooting Quick Reference Guide (PDF).

Please note that if the crankcase has become contaminated with fuel, it is important to drain the diluted oil to ensure interior components are properly lubricated. It is recommended that the engine is refilled with new oil and drained repeatedly until no smell of gasoline remains in the drained oil.
